Ross is a vibrant Gold mining town on the Glacier Highway, 20 minute drive south of Hokitika. Set amid New Zealand rainforest, rugged mountains and wild beaches, Ross has a nice climate and unique atmosphere.
Ross offers accommodation, fishing, arts and crafts and the Ross Goldfields Heritage Area.
Visit the Information Centre where you will be introduced to the regional gold history. Gold was found in all forms in Ross in 1864-1867 including alluvial deposits, quartz rock and beach sand gold. It is also the discovery place of New Zealand’s largest gold nugget – the Roddy Nugget which was the size of a Man’s hand. Nowadays you can view a replica of the Roddy Nugget or even try for your own by gold panning at the Info Centre.
Take a guided walk or stroll along the beach. There are several short bush and historic walks in the area too.
