Here are some activities for you to do in and around Kaniere/Milltown.

Walks

Dorothy Falls

Time: 2 min one way
About 3.5 km from Hans Bay along Dorothy Falls Road, a short walk leads to the base of Dorothy Falls - a lovely spot for a refreshing dip.

Dorothy Creek Beach Walk

Time: 5 min one way, Distance: 250m
Opposite Dorothy Falls another short five minute track takes you to the lake edge.
Great fishing and Picnic Spot

Sunny Bight

At the north western end of the lake. Picnic tables, toilets, short walk through Kahikatea Forest, grassy area and a pebble beach. The Lake Kaniere Walkway starts here too.

Kahikatea Forest Walk

(Easy, 10 min loop)
This walk follows the Sunny Bight Creek and passes through virgin kahikatea forest and over a flax swamp. The track starts at the Sunny Bight picnic area at the north end of the lake.

Lake Kaniere Walkway

(Moderate, 4 hours one way with no stops)
This track follows the western shores of the lake passing through lakeside forest, over streams and next to beaches. You can start either at the southern end of the lake, near Lake Kaniere Lodge or at the northern end at Sunny Bight.

There are many picturesque bays, numerous forest streams and lush lakeside forest. A lookout point over the lake is offered part way up Mt Upright/Te Taumata o Uekanaku. The walkway emerges at the southern end of the lake on the Dorothy Falls Road. Open to Mountain bikers.
